Each year from September 15 to October 15, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of people whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. At UConn Extension, we join in this celebration by highlighting the connections between food, family, and community that enrich the lives of so many.
Food as Culture and Connection
Food traditions are central to Hispanic and Latin heritage. Recipes are passed down from generation to generation, carrying with them stories, flavors, and shared experiences. Preparing and enjoying meals together builds community and creates lasting memories.
Our Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) works closely with Hispanic and Latin families across Connecticut, supporting healthy eating, cooking skills, and food security. Educators in EFNEP bring cultural traditions into the kitchen, making learning accessible and relevant while honoring heritage.
Extension in the Community
UConn Extension programs are rooted in the belief that learning happens everywhere—in classrooms, kitchens, community centers, and gardens. By celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, we recognize the many ways Hispanic and Latin communities contribute to our shared food systems, traditions, and futures in Connecticut.
We encourage you to take this month to explore new recipes, learn from your neighbors, and honor the role of food in bringing people together.
¡Feliz Mes de la Herencia Hispana!
