Hurricane Gabrielle is making headlines — we all need to take a moment to ensure our homes, families, and plans are ready for this or any other extreme weather event. Here’s a checklist from our UConn Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN) to help you prepare:
- Build or refresh your emergency supply kit: water (1 gal/person/day for at least 3 days), non-perishable food, flashlight, batteries, first-aid items, pet supplies, cash, important documents.
- Plan for flooding & hurricane risks: know whether you live in a flood zone, find evacuation routes, and know how to respond to storm surge or heavy rainfall.
- Protect your home: clear gutters, secure loose outdoor items, trim tree branches, check roof/shutters/windows.
- Prepare for power outages: have backup power or alternative lighting, keep mobile devices charged, know how to stay cool or warm if heating or A/C go out.
- Plan for vulnerable family members: children, older adults, those with special medical needs. Make sure medication and special supplies are included.
Stay tuned: small actions now can make a big difference if Gabrielle or another extreme weather event impacts our area.
