UConn CLEAR’s Land Use Academy is holding an in-person training for land use commissioners on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at UConn’s Middlesex County Extension Center located at 1066 Saybrook Road, Haddam, CT, 06438. Design to meet 3 hours of state land use commissioner training requirements.

  • Legal Basis for Land Use Regulation
  • Types of Power for Land Use Commissions
  • Types of Application: Zone Change and Regulation Amendments v. Special Permit v. Site Plan v. Variances
  • Meeting Decorum and Responsibilities/Fundamental Fairness

Walking Tour: Green Stormwater Infrastructure on the UConn Campus

In partnership with Sustainable CT’s Earth Month tour series, CLEAR’s NEMO team will lead a walking tour of green stormwater infrastructure on the UConn Campus. The tour will feature rain gardens/bioretention, pervious pavers, pervious pavement, green roofs, and an infiltrating snow shelf.

Webinar: Free and Open Source GIS Tools Part 2 of 2

Presented by: Ashley Benitez & Carl Zimmerman, CT GIS Office

This 45-minute introductory presentation is the second in a two-part series on free and open source GIS. It will cover the new and broad ecosystem of GIS and geospatial tools (e.g. viewers, scripting tools and desktop applications), explain how to choose the right tools for your set of uses cases, access public data, and how to conduct simple spatial analyses with QGIS.

Workshop: The Science and Regulation of Wetlands in CT

Presented by: Josh Wilson, wetland scientist and East Hampton Wetlands Agency Chair, & Mike Zizka, land use attorney, scientist, and author

This half day workshop will explore both the science of wetlands and the regulation of development related to wetlands in CT. Josh Wilson, Senior Ecologist at Biohabitats and Chair of the East Hampton Inland Wetlands Watercourse Agency, will discuss the scientific and ecological issues that Wetland Commissioners should know. Mike Zizka, a renowned Land Use attorney, scientist, and author of “What’s Legally Required,” will cover the dos and don’ts and ins and outs of local wetland. Will be held at the UConn Middlesex County Extension Center, 1066 Saybrook Road, Haddam, CT 06438 with a virtual option.
