Dr. John Bovay will join the ARE Department in August 2016 as Assistant Professor with 60% extension, 25% research, and 15% teaching responsibilities.

Since June 2014, John has been an agricultural economists in the Diet, Safety, and Health Economics Branch of the Food Economics Division of ERS/USDA. His work there has focused on the interactions between regulations and private standards in the context of food production practices and food attributes, with particular attention to food safety, animal welfare, labeling, imports, and marketing strategies for food loss. Prior to graduate school, he worked as an economics research associate at Abt Associates in Bethesda, Maryland, where he provided support for Environmental Protection Agency rule-making processes.

John has a Ph.D. n Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of California, Davis, under the supervision of Dan Sumner and Julian Alston. He earned a B.A. magna cum laude in Mathematics and Politics at Washington and Lee University in Virginia. He won the Richardson-Appelbaum Award for Best Ph.D. Dissertation from the Food Distribution Research Society and the RM Pinkerton Agricultural Marketing Graduate Award in 2014 and the Earle Bates Prize in Environmental Studies in 2007. He is fluent in Spanish and Mandarin.
