Each year UConn students apply to and compete for paid internship opportunities with the UConn Cooperative Extension Service. Through its offices located throughout Connecticut, UConn Extension connects the power of UConn research to local issues by creating practical, science-based answers to complex problems. Extension provides scientific knowledge and expertise to the public in areas such as: economic viability, business and industry, community development, agriculture and natural resources. This year 10 students were selected from the pool of applicants for the following internship roles.
JOANNA SLEMP, Junior, Resource Economics Development of Online Learning Modules for the Ornamental/Turf Program Intern – West Hartford, CT
Joanna will help develop the design and arrangement of content, graphic interfaces and other necessary technical items needed to support the development of the Online Learning Modules. Her supervisor/mentor is Candace Bartholomew.
SANTIAGO PALAEZ MOSQUERA, Junior, Natural Resources and the Environment Development of a Sustainable Practices Education Certificate Program Intern – Norwich, CT
Santiago will help develop a “sustainable” certificate program for various sectors of the green industry including golf, sports turf, and nursery/garden center and landscape industry sectors that serve to promote and foster green sustainable education. His supervisor/mentor is Victoria Wallace.
NADEGE KENFACK, Graduate Student, Agriculture & Resource Economics Sustainable Food Systems Program Intern – Vernon, CT
Nadege will work to further develop strategies to increase local food consumption, with a particular interest in CSAs and buy local campaigns. Her supervisor/mentor is Jiff Martin.
KERRIN KINNEAR, Junior, Environmental Studies Low Impact Storm Water Regulations Intern – Haddam, CT
Kerrin will work with town staff on the adoption and implementation of low impact storm water regulations, by interviewing key town staff in other towns that have begun to adopt LID-friendly storm water regulations to get a sense of the drivers behind the regulations, factors affecting LID implementation and the impact of the regulations. Her supervisor/mentor is Dave Dickson.
DELANEY PATTERSON, Senior, Animal Science 4-H Equine and County Fair Program Intern – Haddam, CT
Delaney’s internship in Middlesex County will be working with the State 4-H Horse Program and the Middlesex & New Haven County 4-H Fair Program. Her supervisor/mentor is Emily Alger.
JOANNA MURAWSKI, Graduate Student, Health Promotion 4-H Education, Fair and Social Media Program Intern – Norwich, CT
Joanna will assist the New London County 4-H Program Coordinator in providing outreach through the delivery of 4-H programs, assisting in the preparation and duties of the New London County 4-H Fair, assist in 4-H promotion through social media, and assist in managing administrative duties as required by the 4-H program. Her supervisor/mentor is Pamela Gray.
HOLLY LEWIS, Sophomore, Allied Health Science 4-H Education and Pasture/Livestock Data Program Intern – Brooklyn, CT
Holly will work with 4-H youth in gardening, STEM mini camps, and county fair activities, and travel to local livestock farms to sample for pasture quality and collect livestock yield data. Her supervisor/mentor is Marc Cournoyer.
REBECCA MASSE, Junior, Agriculture & Natural Resources 4-H Program Assistant – Hartford County
Rebecca will work on a variety of unique and innovative 4-H programmatic initiatives. Her supervisor/mentor is Laura Marek.
ALIX MORIARITY, Junior, Nutritional Sciences 4-H Fair/Fair board Program Intern – Vernon, CT
Alix will work to help insure the success of the 74th Tolland County 4-H Fair, which is the product that the teen program Fairboard works all year to produce. Her supervisor is Maryann Fusco.
YOON-YOUNG CHOI, Graduate Student, Resource Economics 4-H Youth Development Program Research, Assessment and Evaluation Intern – Torrington, CT
Yoon will research current 4-H youth development program evaluation models, collect data to be used for evaluating several aspects of the UConn 4-H Program, and work in conjunction with the 4-H staff in writing up results of the evaluation. Her supervisor/mentor is Laura Marek.
